Cupid Christmas
Chapter Four
Lights twinkled in the distant hills and the stars shone brightly in the night sky. Steve stared out the window of his hotel room for a moment making a wish on the brightest star even though Brad had told him he didn’t need to. Then he tipped his head to stare at Dalton. Now that they were away from the prying eyes of the people in the dining room, Steve wasn’t quite sure where to start the conversation. Or even if he wanted to. What he really wanted was to sink into the heat of Dalton’s body and let the man fuck him into the next year.
The Stetson he’d bought for his lover all those years ago lay on a side table next to a comfortable arm chair. Dalton stood beside the table looking horribly unsure of himself. Steve discovered he didn’t like the tentativeness of Dalton’s demeanor one bit. He liked the humility and conscience the man had grown, but he missed Dalton’s humor and his self-confidence. He missed the way Dalton took charge of him and aroused him with a simple glance.
The new Dalton looked beaten and battered both inside and out and for a moment hatred for Mac Brenner seared Steve. He knew Mac, and he knew that half the reason Mac had been so hard on Dalton was because Mac was a homophobe. He hated gays, and he couldn’t be around Steve without making vicious digs about his sexual persuasion. Mac was one reason he and Dalton hadn’t seen much of each other in the last decade. Steve couldn’t stand to be around the narrow-minded prick.
“How’s your business?” he asked, hoping to get Dalton to relax a little.
“Growing.” Dalton sighed, his shoulders drooping. “I funnel all my money back into it, into the stock. Riley offered me stock today with only a down payment. He was kind enough to float me but that down payment took every penny I had. Still, his stock will allow me to make a lot more money so I should be able to pay him back fairly soon.”
Steve’s gaze raked over Dalton’s whipcord body. His former lover had never been so slender even at twenty-one. He knew then that Dalton had gone hungry in order to save his money for his business. His heart ached as if a vise closed around it. He wished Dalton had called him. He could barely stand to think of Dalton alone, hungry and in pain. Sure, the situation had come about because of Dalton’s own actions but no one deserved to lose everything the way Dalton had. No one deserved to lose themselves.
“That’s good. I’m glad it’s going okay.” He sat down on the end of the bed and leaned his elbows on his knees, letting his hands dangle between them. “I’m glad you’re out too. Jared mentioned seeing you with Diego.”
Dalton winced visibly. “It was one time,” he whispered gruffly.
“You don’t have to explain to me, Dalton. You’re single and free to be with whomever you like.
